As it is Blue Monday, we wanted to try and 'lighten' the mood a bit..??

How about a deep dive into the differences between Luminescence, Photoluminescence, Fluorescence, and Phosphorescence...

Luminescence is the general term referring to light emitted by something not resulting from heat. It's like the magical glow-in-the-dark stick-on stars you may have had on your ceiling when you were younger!

Photoluminescence occurs when substances absorb photons and then re-radiate them, like glow sticks!

Fluorescence is a specific type of photoluminescence; whats interesting? It stops glowing the moment you turn the light off.

And lastly, we have phosphorescence. Unlike fluorescence, this one sticks around a while even when the light source is removed! Ever noticed how some watches or clocks glow in the dark even after the lights are out?

Scientific phenomenons are all around us in everyday life, so next time you see something glowing, remember, theres more to that glow than meets the eye!

In this blog, we take a further look into the differences.
