Isotopes and bones!

Last week our resident blogger Steve was in surgery that involved multiple (controlled) bone fractures. That got him thinking about bones and isotopes.

It’s now widely accepted that uptake of minerals by the body can cause isotopic fractionation. Clinicians now consider that calcium isotope ratios in bones can be an indicator of bone mineral balance and can even act as an early biomarker for conditions such as osteoporosis. Bone removal is less than ideal for the patient (just ask Steve!) but luckily the isotopes can be measured in urine or serum.

Here is a good publication that explores the technique, involving multiple groups including UCL Great Ormond Street Hospital, UK and GEOMAR in Kiel, Germany.
